The Booger Dance was a sacred ceremony of the Cherokee Indians in which Medicine Men would come to scare off evil spirits that may have entered their villages. In order to scare off evil spirits these Booger Men had to be themselves very scary, in their appearance as well as their actions. Most would wear gourd masks. In today's society we have taken this name, Booger Man, and twisted it as we do many things we do not understand and coined our own boogie man from it. The Booger Man was not necessarily a bad person. These Medicine Men had a job to do and they knew how to do it. Later in time, this ceremony became one in which the People used to scare off the intruders from the east. It did not have the result they prayed for.
